Its hard to escape the headlines about interest rate rises in recent weeks. Clearly, its been a volatile few months as the markets react to the fluctuations in energy costs and inflationary pressures. Rates have indeed crept up since March this year, but there is more to it then the overly gloomy headlines.
The average fixed rate over the last 40 years has been between 5%-6% - and current rates are hovering towards the lower end of this range. There is also reason to be cautiously optimistic for the outlook of rates next year – its likely the Bank of England will increase the base rate by 0.25%-0.5% over the winter, but some financial establishments (including HSBC) predict that the base rate may actually start to drop back as we move towards next summer.
