Top Negotiator joins the Southsea Team

Holly Blair has joined the Team at Pearsons successful Southsea office after a record breaking year as the Senior Lettings Negotiator at their Central Southampton Branch and achieving the accolade of Lettings Negotiator of the Year. Holly is no stranger though to Southsea, having family connections with the area and now living in Old Portsmouth. Holly has over four years’ experience in Lettings, having started her career in Fareham and has seen rapid advancement, culminating in her new position.

Holly said of her new role “I am so grateful for the experiences that I had in the incredibly busy Southampton office and really enjoyed my time there, but I am hugely looking forward to the opportunities and growing the business in the Southsea Office”

Romsey, historic market town

Romsey is known for being one of the oldest market towns in Hampshire, as well as having one of the best examples of Norman architecture in history: Romsey Abbey.

The market town of Romsey is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in England.
Romsey lies on the River Test, the pure chalk stream that’s famous for its abundance of brown trout. The Test Way is a 44-mile trail that allows you to walk along the banks of the river and enjoy its profusion of wildlife.

As the river flows by the town it passes Romsey Abbey, one of the best examples of Norman architecture in Europe. Founded in the 10th-century by Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, it was a Benedictine monastery for nuns that had many royal connections.

Opposite the Abbey is King John’s House, the main building of a medieval complex dating back to 1240 – it’s one of England’s oldest surviving dwellings. Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester, built most of the Abbey you see today between 1120 and 1130 though traces of an earlier Saxon church can still be seen.

Nowadays, the Abbey acts as a parish church for the town with a lively calendar of events, activities, concerts and services held throughout the year. The Abbey is also the last resting place of Lord Louis Mountbatten. As you walk south from Romsey you can see Broadlands, the grand Palladian-style mansion that was once the home of Lord Mountbatten and is now open to the public during summer months.

Markets past and present

As well as these historical attractions, Romsey is also known for being one of the oldest market towns in Hampshire. King Henry I granted Romsey its first charter. This allowed a market to be held every Sunday and a four-day annual fair each year in May.

Today, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets continues this tradition by holding a market in the town on the first Sunday of each month. Romsey’s Alma Road Car Park is transformed on these days as over thirty stallholders take their places to sell an enticing assortment of produce. Visitor numbers can exceed 3500 on a busy day as people flock to buy meat, fish, cheese, bread, cakes, cider and wine.

As well as the popular Sunday Farmers’ Market, the Cornmarket holds regular weekly street markets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And once a year, the Cornmarket also plays host to the Beggars Fair – a lively one-day festival that has been running since 1993. With the aim of showcasing the best of local talent, Romsey comes alive as folk, jazz, blues and world music, dance displays, and children’s entertainment are performed on streets and venues across the town.

It’s a delight to stroll through these streets with their charming shops, restaurants and cafés. The Abbey, King John’s House and the Town Hall are all within five minutes walk of each other. The surrounding charms of the nearby Test River and the New Forest go to make Romsey one of the most attractive towns in Hampshire.

Bungalow’s sale was in the bag!

In summer 2014, Pearsons Romsey received instructions to sell a bungalow in Durban Close. Sales Agent Mari Glover immediately contacted Mr and Mrs Lomax, who had registered to receive details of similar properties, and arranged a viewing.

Before they went to look at the bungalow, Mr and Mrs Lomax popped into their local household recycling centre to dispose of some garden waste, and a friendly stranger offered them a green garden waste bag that he had been using while tidying up the garden of a recently deceased relative.

By a strange quirk of fate, the garden in question was attached to the bungalow that Mr and Mrs Lomax were due to see – and subsequently bought!

Top 10 Tips for valuations and viewings

An estate agent valuing your property has the experience to look beyond the superficial to see the worth of your home. They’ll soon tell you if there are easy to fix issues that would make your house more appealing in the eyes of potential buyers.

We all have different tastes and styles when it comes to decorating our homes. Therefore, when it’s time to market your property, there’s probably no point in making dramatic changes, as choices in décor or layout will always be subjective.

Nevertheless, if there are straightforward steps you can take that will broaden the appeal of your house, it may be worth considering them. Jeremy Beckingsale gives his top ten tips on how to show your home to its best advantage to viewers.

1. Exteriors: first impressions count
Take an objective look at the outside of your property and if it’s looking a little run down, evaluate the extent of work needed to smarten it up. Simple jobs like cleaning fascia boards or applying a quick lick of paint to flaky woodwork can give exteriors an instant facelift.

2. Garden makeover
We’re not talking about major landscaping, just taming overgrown areas. Mowing the lawn and pulling up weeds from paving won’t take long and can make a world of difference.

3. Remove obstacles
It’s best not to make your prospective buyer jump over hurdles. This may mean moving children’s play things, pets’ toys and baskets, bicycles or sports items.

4. Ensure rooms smell fresh
Strong cooking odours or lingering pet smells can be off-putting. Open windows to allow fresh air to circulate and install discreet air fresheners.

5. Clear clutter
Potential buyers will expect to see the usual ornaments and knick-knacks. However, too much clutter can be a distraction. A clear out of unwanted items will not only make space it will save time when you come to move.

6. Open up the view
Moving unused items of furniture can open up a room and make it look more spacious. If an area is too crowded viewers may struggle to appreciate the true dimensions of a room.

7. Let in light
Maximise the amount of natural light coming into your house by making sure all curtains and blinds are fully open. Cut back overgrown trees or shrubs if they obscure light.

8. Brighten a dull room
If a room is a little dark give the impression of brightness by using higher wattage light bulbs. Or paint the walls in pale colours and add mirrors to provide reflected light.

9. Leave the building
Your home is, of course, personal to you, and sometimes this can make prospective buyers feel awkward. They may refrain from too much discussion in front of you, but not feel the same restraint with an impartial agent. They are likely to spend longer viewing and ask more questions (giving the agent the opportunity to respond to any concerns) if you’re not there.

10. Trust your estate agent
Experienced estate agents know what they’re doing. They will have sold numerous properties in the past, so why not trust them to sell your house rather than trying to do it yourself.

Make the most of your garden this winter

As the nights draw in and days get shorter you may think it’s all over in the garden for this year, however...

There is still plenty to do in preparation for the new season. Now is the time to clear away the old and prepare for the new. Ensure you remove aging foliage and vegetation to avoid rot on the ground.

As autumn leaves fall on the dying plants of summer, it’s the perfect time to think about building a compost heap or incorporating a compost converter into your garden. Composting is a great way to turn household scraps and garden waste into nutrient-rich fertiliser. Weeds, leaves, vegetable scraps, cut flowers, and even newspapers and coffee grounds can all be composted.

It’s an ideal time to dig over empty beds and work in some fertiliser. This will give your soil a nutrient boost over winter, preparing it for fresh planting in spring.

Winter is also a good time to make plans. As plants die back and leaves fall from the trees, you can see the landscape of your garden more clearly. Areas that were full of life during the spring and summer may now be looking rather dull.

If you’re looking for planting ideas to bring colour and interest during the colder months, it’s worth visiting the Winter Garden at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Romsey. A walk around this stunning Winter Garden will provide inspiration for both seasoned and novice gardeners. It is situated close to the Visitor Pavilion and contains more than 650 different winter plants. These species show that winter needn’t be a quiet time for gardens as these plants are at their best from November until March.

In early 2014, the Winter Garden was extended and now covers around 4 acres making it one of the largest Winter Gardens in Europe. Many new plants have been added including 500 cyclamen tubers that were planted as ground cover.

A new large bed has been planted with Salix (willow) and Cornus (dogwoods) with extra height provided by existing birch trees. This simple combination of just four or five plant groups creates a highly effective welcoming scene.

The Winter Garden’s innovative planting schemes draw on a bold palette of bark, coloured stems, scent and foliage to give visual interest, as well as fragrance and texture. There’s plenty on show for visitors to enjoy and gardeners to emulate.

Zumba Party

on the 27

September at The Waterside Theatre in Holbury, in aid of
The Waterside Cancer Support Centre.
 
Zumba instructors Claire Blay, Sharon Semmens, Debbie Tracey, Debs
Jones, Bernie Wyse, Jeanette Smith and DJ John Towers kept everyone on the
dance floor.
  Together with a raffle, of
prizes donated by local shops and businesses ; The Grove Garden, Dawkins &
Lodge, Hobbits, Cards for all occasions, Peter Allen, Bells, Prescents, Bebe’s,
J Collins & sons, CGM, Waitrose, Dibden Golf course,
  Tesco, Fairweathers, Paultons Park and

We raised a total of £1,270.

Old Town’s Secret Medieval History

Old Town is an attractive proposition for residents keen to live alongside or in some of the most historic buildings in Southampton.

Nestled away on French Street is the Medieval Merchant's House, a hidden gem now in the care of English Heritage. In a bygone age, this was a bustling centre of commerce as traders gathered to barter goods.
